The Waiheke Community Housing Trust was formed to address the increasing rental housing crisis on Waiheke Island.

On a steep and difficult to access site the building with 3 flats was designed by Lapp & Toft Architecture Ltd in 2018-2019, in close collaboration with Paul Carew Trust Chair, Mark Inglis Trust secretary and Wendy Baverstock Trustee and planning consultant.

Chris McCarthny of Gulf Architects Ltd. prepared the Building Consent documentation.

The building contains a 4 bedroom flat on the lower level, with a 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom flat on the upper level designed to Accessible Standards.

The Gulf News (local newspaper on Waiheke Island) published an article about the project when construction began.

The construction period was protracted due to delays during the Covid Pandemic and the building was completed in 2022.

You can find out more about this project watching the below video, which the Trust published during construction

Unfortunately, at the end of 2022 the Trust reluctantly had to sell the property as the worsening economy made it impossible  to keep up with the financial obligations.

The money from the sale and a generous donation to the trust by the new owner, Man o’ War Vineyards, will enable the Waiheke Community Housing Trust to pursue other housing projects with the objective of providing affordable rental housing.
